2018-2019 AFFORDABLE Winternship Opportunity

 

Coming into 2019, AFFORDABLE is always looking for new and excited volunteers to help AFFORDABLE’s growing development needs and help mentor student skill sets in the process. AFFORDABLE is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to improving community networking, resource distribution, and medical debt remediation. For this Winternship season, we will be looking for both software developers to continue building our online platform, and also students interested in healthcare writing and journalism to reach out to the community and share your experiences and insight into the US healthcare system. Software Development Position for Motivated Undergraduates

During the 2018-2019 winter months, we are looking for undergraduate students who are interested in technology and healthcare. Our 501c3 nonprofit organization is currently under development and refinement, and we believe that this time period could be a valuable team building experience for people looking for new experiences in technology development relating to networking and healthcare. Our team of volunteers find this experience to be both rewarding and productive.

Minimum Applicant Requirements

  • Interest in pursuing a career in computer science/software development
  • Have at least 1 year of undergraduate experience, with completion of introductory coursework in computer science
  • Have potential interest in a long term volunteer contribution and joining our permanent team

Position Details

  • The “Winternship” will be for a minimum of 5 weeks
  • Students will be required to attend weekly meetings with team leader, and biweekly team meetings
  • Be available for frequent communication and responsive to emails
  • Capable of working for 6-8 hours/day during the winter break, and 4 hrs. per week if 5 week period has overlap with semester course work.
  • create a final presentation to be given for the team summarizing contribution

Skills Learned

Not all of these skills will be focused on during the Winternship. If there are specific skills you are interested in learning, please make that clear so we can allocate a project that is appropriate

  • Javascript front end development
  • Building a user interface for medical patients to register for bill assistance
  • C++ Linux server development
  • Work with high performance low latency networking
  • Experience with epoll
  • Experience with flatbuffers
  • Memory mapped ringbuffers
  • OpenSSL
  • Websocket from scratch
  • Webrtc and HTTP 1.1 from scratch
  • Python analytics: experience with reporting, jupyter notebook, matplotlib, pandas, HDF5
  • C++ experiences with encryption

Healthcare Writing and Journalism Position for Motivated Undergraduates

Our mission is simple—create one portal, one application, and one database, which will automatically connect individuals to healthcare systems for charity, services, and medical debt. As a result, the network will reduce barriers to healthcare access and improve resource distribution. Our goal is for students to confront real world limitations in the healthcare industry to bring greater awareness to issues in the community, healthcare system, and assist guiding our goals to make a positive impact on local communities.

We hope that this network building process involves refining writing, researching, and interviewing skills that are applicable to your career development. Our team of volunteers find this experience to be both rewarding and productive.
